Log into your Windows server with an administrative level account. If you are in the same boat as me, below I detailed each step I took so that you too can remotely manage a Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V server from Windows 10.įirst, we need to configure the Hyper-V host to accept remote connections: With a few minor tweaks, I was finally able get it working. It wasn't until I stumbled across this TechNet article that inspired me to give local Hyper-V manager client a second chance.

It seemed no matter what I tried, I ran into various issues trying to get my Windows 10 PC to authenticate to the Hyper-V host. I tried to use the Hyper-V Manager client on my Windows 10 PC to connect to my Hyper-V host unsuccessfully for months. To work around the problem I would typically RDP to the server to use the Hyper-V Manager on the server. But like most home labs, and the rest of the PCs in my house, they are not joined to a domain which can make remotely managing Hyper-V difficult. My setup is built on Windows Server 2016 and I use Hyper-V to host a number of virtual servers and workstations for testing. This makes it a prime candidate for anyone with a home lab. It has broad hardware support, costs nothing extra, and can easily be enabled on Windows Server. Virtual machines do not switch between wired and wireless automatically.I have grown to be a fan of Hyper-V over the years. Depending on how the laptop connects to the network, you can change your virtual machines between these switches. If you’re running Windows 10 Hyper-V on a laptop and frequently switch between wireless networking and a wired network, you may want to create a virtual switch for both the ethernet and wireless network cards. To set up a NAT network and connect it to a virtual machine, follow the NAT networking user guide. NAT uses an internal switch - creating an internal switch doesn't cause you to use network connection and tends to interfere less with a computer's networking.NAT allows multiple virtual machines to host applications that require identical (internal) communication ports by mapping these to unique external ports.NAT Conserves IP addresses by mapping an external IP address and port to a much larger set of internal IP addresses.Network Address Translation (NAT) gives a virtual machine access to your computer's network by combining the host computer's IP address with a port through an internal Hyper-V Virtual Switch. Virtual networking on a laptop NAT networking New-VMSwitch -Name "External VM Switch" -AllowManagementOS $True -NetAdapterName $net.Name $net = Get-NetAdapter -Name 'Ethernet'Įxecute the following command to create the new Hyper-V virtual switch. Select the network adapter to use with the Hyper-V switch and place an instance in a variable named $net. Name InterfaceDescription ifIndex Status MacAddress LinkSpeedĮthernet 2 Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Cont. Use Get-NetAdapter to return a list of network adapters connected to the Windows 10 system. The following steps can be used to create a virtual switch with an external connection using PowerShell. Select OK to close the Virtual Switch Manager Window. At this point you will most likely see the following message. Select Apply to create the virtual switch.

This is the network card that is physically connected to the network.

Select the physical network card to be paired with the new virtual switch. Under ‘Connection Type’, ensure that External Network has been selected. Under ‘Virtual Switch Properties’, give the new switch a name such as External VM Switch. Under 'What type of virtual switch do you want to create?', select External. Under the 'Virtual Switches' section, select New virtual network switch. In Hyper-V Manager, select Virtual Switch Manager. Select the server in the left pane, or click "Connect to Server." in the right pane.

If search doesn't find Hyper-V Manager, Hyper-V or the Hyper-V management tools are not enabled. A quick way to do this is by hitting the Windows button or key then type "Hyper-V Manager". Create a Virtual Switch with Hyper-V Manager Once completed, your Hyper-V host will have a virtual switch that can connect virtual machines to the internet through your computer's network connection. This exercise walks through creating an external virtual switch. Create an external switch to share your computer's network with the virtual machines running on it. Hyper-V has three types of virtual switches - external, internal, and private. Creating a virtual network is optional - if your virtual machine doesn't need to be connected to the internet or a network, skip ahead to creating a Windows Virtual Machine. Your virtual machines will need a virtual network to share a network with your computer.
